Hello,
Has anyone on the list knowledge of an old mine in Illogan, Cornwall,
named 'The Washells Called the Piece?'
I would like to track down more information on this mine if at all possible.
I've run across only the following reference which is found in
"Exploring Cornish Mines Volume I," by Kenneth Brown & Bob Acton:
"Eventually you will reach the little hamlet of Piece. A.K. Hamilton
Jenkin suggests that this unusual name derives from an old mine called
'The Washells Called the Piece.' Who or what 'Washells' are or were is
anyone's guess; could it be a corruption of "wastrel", the term used in
Cornwall for unenclosed land where tinners were free to prospect?"
------end extract from book ------
My Jenkin family was in this area of Piece for many generations, both as
farmers and miners (according to the various records).
Any information concerning this "The Washells Called the Piece" is
greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Sandy Bolick
