This may be common knowledge, but recently I read a biography of W H
Auden (Charles Osborne: W H Auden. The Life of a Poet (1979)) which
lists (p 13) the books in his house when he was young. These included
'Machinery for Metalliferous Mines', author not given, but probably the
second ed (1902) of the superbly illustrated book by E Henry Davies. I
had the good fortune to pick up a copy (for 5 pounds!) in Wrexham market
not long ago. It's an extremely useful work for the mining historian,
providing all sorts of useful practical detail about mining and dressing
machinery, electricity, aerial ropeways, etc.
