May I add a few ropeways located on the continent?
I remember one connecting a quarry to a cement-factory in
Grevenbrueck (at the railway line from Hagen to Siegen / Germany)
It has been in operation until the mid 90ies, but is gone unfortunately.
(On the other hand: this increases the value of the photographs, I have
taken there :-)
An other aerial ropeway is (or was) located between Blaubeuren and Ulm
in South Germany. (I have seen it in operation a few years ago.)
The Siegen area, which uesed to be full of iron mines and furnances
until the 60ies still has a few remains of ropeways. I remember one
close to Eiserfeld. According to historical photographs it has been
used to transport dump material. You can still see parts of the
top station with it's weights and a huge wheel to redirect the rope.
An othe interesting site is the frontier between Luxemburg and
France in the Lorraine area. There are remains (hundreds of pylons)
of ropeways used to connect ore-mines to the furnances.
