Re-posted from a recent collection of archaeological news cuttings posted on
the britarch list -
Yorkshire Post (11 January 1999):
`Grandeur of Yorkshire's lead-mining past is a lesson in history for the school
children of today'
Details of a survey of old lead smelting sites in Yorkshire by a student from
Bradford University will be given in a talk at the Archaeological Resource
Centre in York on 16 January.
I suspect the student is Ken Hamilton who was recently awarded a MSc at
Bradford having submitted a dissertation on the 'Assessment of early lead
working sites in the Yorkshire Dales by archaeological prospection'. His
work is the first structured investigation of lead smelting sites and has
highlighted a number of factors which suggest a significant difference
between smelting sites in Yorkshire and those in Derbyshire.
If the talk is open to the general public, it should be worth attending.
