Newcastle chaldrons as appearing in the posrt books of Southampton Lymington
Portsmouth etc from the 1660'a onwards are clearly of 53 cwts as the sub
unit of the chaldron used is the cwt and amounts in the 30's and 40's are
noted.
As the sources previously quoted make clear the situation in the late middle
ages was quite different
