This probably isn't any help, but for what it's worth Radstock Gas Works
in Somerset was owned by the Waldegrave family who also owned the local
collieries. Both businesses fell into the hands of the Beauchamp family in
about 1925 and then operated as part of Somerset Collieries Ltd.
I haven't looked into this in any great detail, but I suspect that it was a
case of a colliery company owning a gas company as a sideline rather than
the reverse. I suspect that this situation might have been rather more
common than gas companies owning collieries. I think that there were
published official lists of gas companies in the late C19 which could be
used to check this.
