A colleague and I are planning a day's hike through the Newlands valley,
south of Keswick in the Lake District, a place I haven't visited since the
Ambleside NAMHO Conference back in the 80s. We thought we might have a
couple of short underground excursions into the Goldscope and Dale Head
Mines, but I have no up-to-date information about the condition of these
two. From what I recall, I don't think Dale Head will be a problem, but I'm
sure I read somewhere about some major ground movements in Goldscope.
Does anyone have any recent experience of these mines which would be
helpful, or better still, any up-to-date plans or surveys? I've got most of
the books on mining in the Lake District, but the last info I have on these
two mines is dated 1988.
Grateful for any help or pointers.
