You can do little better than refer to 'Whale on Copyright' a book by Jeremy Philips, Robin Durie and Ian Karet, publisher Sweet and Maxwell - our edition is 1993.
As I understand it:
Copyright is with the author until the author or his/her estate assigns it. Even if the work was written to a commission.
