Does anyone have any recent plans, surveys or other reports on the present
condition of the famous Boltsburn Mine at Rookhope, five or six miles
north-west of Stanhope in Weardale? I've gleaned as much as I can from
Dunham. I've also had soft information from a couple of guys who took out an
exploration lease and who tried the main adit, but they say it's blocked a
few hundred feet in. From what I can make of the geology, the first six
hundred feet or so are in shale before the strata dip and then the drive is
in the limestone for two miles or more. The potential is therefore for
anything up to a six-hundred foot long run-in, I guess, while the water flow
suggests it's backed up to the roof.
Perhaps someone out there has tried it, or knows of other access points
which have enabled the present condition of the mine to be determined.
Grateful for any info.
I'm also offering reassurances at this point that no unauthorised access is
being planned! I'm just trying to establish if the mine is gone for good.
Thanks in advance.
