Another request for information, this time in relation to the use of square
set shaft timbering from Barbara Ford <[log in to unmask]> who has --
>been required to find
>pictures of a shaft developed by a mining engineer named Philip (or
>Philipp) Deidesheimer on the Comstock in 1860.
>
>Our instructor is offering an additional points if we can locate picture
(or even >information) on square set
>mining methods prior to this 1860 date.
Providing a fairly early date for the use of such shaft timbering is no real
problem - see Agricola (Georgius Agricola, De Re Metallica, translated
Hoover, Herbert Clark. and Hoover, Lou Henry. New York, 1950, p. 123.)
and the archaeological evidence from circa 1450 at Coleorton.
But, this sort of request raises the question as to how much information you
can supply when asked to answer a specific academic question. Better to
point the enquirer in the direction of relevant sources, primary and
secondary. Which brings me to my query - what is published on shaft
timbering techniques?
