This actually looks like an excellent idea. As far as I know, this has not
been attempted, at least not in the UK, though there are those who have
attacked parts.
As its such a vast subject, maybe the first task would be to set up a
contents list, debate that and agree, then allocate responsibility. I'd be
more than happy to help.
The primary research would be an enormous job: for example I know of no book
covering early underground mines locos as a subject- or for that matter more
recent ones, though I know that outline studies do exist for a couple of UK
builders. Do such books exist in the US?
Personally, I'm not much interested in the period before say 1870, but I
know that for others interest dies off way before then. So, a collaborative
effort sounds like the best way to get something out without an inordinate
amount of individual time being involved.
