Invented by a German mining engineer in 1883 the Pieler lamp was
designed to measure very small amounts of gas that were otherwise a
problem for detection using the more common Davy lamp.
Clement Le Neve Foster describes the Pieler lamp in some detail (Trans.
Geol. Soc. Manchester, v.27. 1884.)
The general consensus of opinion in this paper, read before the Society,
seems to be favourable to its introduction and use in UK mines. Does
anyone know its ultimate fate, either in UK or German collieries. Or
where information may be obtained?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
