personalities have mining connections:  Sir Charles, local MP and
campaigner for miners’ rights; Catharina inherited the iron works at
Flaxley in 1692; Timothy, a free miner and trade union founder; and Sir
John second greatest ironmaster in England.

1999 pp 6-8 illus.  Sir Jimmy Saville worked in a Leed’s coal pit for
one pound and five pence per week.  He was a miner for six years until
he suffered massive injuries after a pit explosion.  Fifty years on he
still wears a back brace.

SottoTerra / The Speleological Magazine of the Speleological Group of
Bologna [Italy].  No 106 Jan-Jul 1998 pp 3 - 59  illus.  Detailed
account of the Sasso Marconi stone working.  Surveys, colour photo etc
all in Italian.  The workings are 700 years old and the stone was used
for water troughs, benches, and lintels for doors and windows.  Later
the workings were used for habitation until 1892 when a collapse caused
numerous deaths and injuries. 

Quarrymen’s cottage rebuilt as exhibit in Slate Museum.  Anon.  Western
