Dear Joan
It's always seemed evident to me that some babies do have quite severe
headaches after such deliveries, but I've always felt hesitant about giving
them drugs so soon after the birth as I'm reluctant to interfere more with
breastfeeding, and they do seem to derive some comfort there. Now, however,
I refer them to a cranial osteopath and have seen some marvellous results,
but this doesn't help in the way of research and it can be out of the reach
of women with little money to spare.

I have been asked by a colleague to request information on the treatment
of potential neonatal pain following instrumental delivery. The unit we
work in currently does not give prophylactic analgesia to such infants
despite it being obvious to everyone that some babies very definitely have
sore heads!!! I know of units that give calpol routinely - does anyone on
the list do so and if so is there any research out there that we can wave
under management's nose!! I do have some general stuff on pain in the
neonate, but any advice re policy or otherwise would be gratefully
received. Many thanks Joan
