What an excellent idea this group is - a supportive forum for midwifery
researchers - at last!
I am a midwifery lecturer at the University of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire
about to go into the third year of my PhD - in fact I have just successfully
converted (what a relief!). I am exploring ways in which midwives mobilise
support for themselves. Initial individual interviews with midwives are
showing that they have nowhere to take the 'emotional exhaustion' from the
job. My approach is action research (very messy!) using unstructured
interviews and focus groups to date. I have measured stress levels at the
start of the project and intend to do this again early next year when I
finish data collection. The research is exciting and fulfilling but very
unpredictable. I have recently been awarded some funding from the West
Yorkshire Education and Training Consortium so this is a great help.
I was very interested to read Billie's introduction as it looks like we may
be exploring similar issues in relation to emotions. Certainly hierarchy
and sensitive power issues feature regularly in my research!
Congratulations, by the way, on being awarded the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust
Research Fellowship
I look forward to future and discussions and talking with Billie
