Hi Folks,
I have no experience of Novatrix but I have experience of fundal pressure in
the second stage of labour. I worked in Belgium between 1979 and 1983 in a
teaching hospital in Brussels and this was common practice. I was horrified
at first thinking of the possibility of uterine inversion, but I never saw
one. No Novatrix here though but simple brute force which consisted of
applying both hands to the fundus and pushing like crazy (literally) during
the contraction. Needless to say that the combination of the uterine
contraction itself and the maternal effort just about rendered the use of
those hands nearly useless. You could feel them lifted of by the abdominal
pressure.
<<The aim of its use is to
increase vaginal delivery rates. One of the local units had a 70%
primigravida epidural rate in one month! >>
I wonder when midwives, obstetricians and anaesthetists will agree to provide
information to women that identifies and quantified their increased risk of
instrumental or surgical delivery associated with epidural. I am all for
choice, but informed choice seems somewhat preferable still.
Best wishes to all
Marianne Mead
