Dear Joan,
We are a group of Midwives in South-East London who have been working with
case load midwifery for 2 1/2 years. We are self-employed contracted into
the NHS (the only group of such midwives in the UK). Our founder members
were The South-East London Midwifery Group Practice. We have been silent in
terms of publications and conferences for some time due to settling into our
current contract and adjusting to changes since the SELMGP lost it's funding
in 1997. I have enclosed some of our statsistics- you will note our high
homebirth rate. This is with women referred to us from local GP's (not
specifically requesting our service)- a population that consists of typical
innercity women (high levels of poverty/multicurtural/local authority
housing etc). We also have a very low level of pharmacological pain relief
use in labour and high levels of continuity of carer throughout pregnancy,
labour and postnatally.
I don't know if this could be of interest to your Conference?
Nicky Leap ([log in to unmask]) Visited us in the summer and would
probably have lots to say about how we work. WE are just about to be
evaluated by Jane Sandall at City Univercity, London.
If you're interested I could give you more information.
Best wishes,
Cathy Walton
