The conference will take place at Oxley Hall, a University of Leeds
hall of residence built in the 1850s and recently restored to its
original Victorian splendour. Oxley is conveniently situated on the
outskirts of Leeds, about five miles from the city centre and four
miles from the university campus, and is easy to get to by public or
private transport. It stands on the east side of the A660
Leeds/Otley/Skipton road, half a mile north of the Leeds Outer Ring
Road (A6120) and is only 20 minutes by taxi from Leeds/Bradford
Airport. Accommodation is in single study bedrooms, each of which
has a wash basin whilst the toilet and shower facilities are shared.
Alternative (en suite) accommodation is available a few hundred yards
away at Weetwood Hall, the University's 108 bedroom hotel/conference
centre of four star standing (details are available on request).
Located in the heart of the old West Riding of Yorkshire, the city of
Leeds was formerly the centre of the world's worsted and woollen
industries and associated engineering. It has recently undergone a
spectacular renaissance, and is now a leading financial centre, with
a thriving commercial and cultural life. The home of Opera North,
the Northern Ballet and the Phoenix Dance Company, the city has
numerous theatres, and the important Henry Moore Gallery. Leeds is
also well known for its museums, which include the spectacular Royal
Armouries Museum, the Thackray Medical Museum, and the Armley
Industrial Museum. Historic buildings include the Town Hall (home of
the Leeds International Piano Competition), the General Infirmary
(designed by Gilbert Scott), and Temple Newsam House.
The Science in the Nineteenth-Century Periodical (SciPer) project is
jointly based at the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies
(Department of English Literature) in the University of Sheffield and
the Division of History and Philosophy of Science (School of
Philosophy) in the University of Leeds. The project, which is funded
by the AHRB and the Leverhulme Trust, aims to identify and analyse
the representation of science, technology and medicine, as well as
the inter-penetration of science and literature, in the general
periodical press in Britain between 1800 and 1900.
