SLATER FELLOWSHIP in HISTORY of 20th-CENTURY PHYSICAL SCIENCES
Scope
The fellowship supports doctoral dissertation research in the history of
the physical sciences in the twentieth century.
Eligibility
The Slater fellowship is open both to candidates for the doctorate in
the United States and to those in universities abroad who propose to
spend the fellowship year in association with an American university or
other appropriate American research institution. A candidate must have
passed all preliminary examinations or the equivalent; the dissertation
topic must focus on the history of the physical sciences in the
twentieth century. The Society encourages candidates to use the
resources of the American Philosophical Society Library, but this is not
a requirement of the fellowship. There is no restriction on where the
fellow resides during the fellowship year.
Award, duration
The Slater fellowship carries a stipend of $12,000. Tenure of the
fellowship usually coincides with the academic year, though it may begin
July 1. Payments are in two installments, in separate calendar years;
in compliance with federal regulations, the Society issues two 1099
miscellaneous income forms.
Deadline, notification
Applications are due no later than December 1. A complete application
includes all the materials listed below. It is the applicant's
responsibility to verify that all materials reached the Society on time;
call 215-440-3429 after 2 pm. Do not use this number to request forms.
Written notification is sent in March.
Application forms
Requests to the Society for forms must indicate eligibility of both
applicant and project; include a self-addressed mailing label.
Telephone requests for forms cannot be honored. Write to:
Slater Fellowship
American Philosophical Society
104 South Fifth Street
Philadelphia, PA 19106
Forms are available at the website, www.amphilsoc.org
They can be downloaded through Acrobat Reader; verify that page format
is maintained and that you have complete information about the program.
Applications include:
1) the form, supplied by the Society or downloaded from the website
2) a statement of the project, giving work accomplished to date, sources
used or to be examined, methodology and interpretive framework, and
stating how the work will increase or modify our knowledge of the
subject. The statement must not exceed 5 double-spaced typed pages
(1500 words). Type name, date, and title of dissertation at the top of
the first page, and last name in capital letters in upper left corner of
each page.
3) a dissertation proposal and/or outline, as accepted by the
applicant's department
4) 2 letters of support, one of them from the dissertation superviser
5) official transcripts
Requirements for fellows
The fellow is required to notify the Society of other fellowships
received; the Slater fellowship cannot be held together with another
major fellowship, such as a Fulbright or an SSRC. At the end of the
fellowship year, the fellow must submit a progress report. The fellow
must provide a bound copy of the dissertation for the Society's Library.
