Lecturer in The History of Medicine
You will have recent experience of research in the history of
medicine within the period 1500-1900. You will have a first degree in
the history of medicine or history and a PhD in the history of
science or medicine or equivalent publications. Applications will
also be welcome from specialists in non-European medicine or the
social history of medicine. Preference will be given to candidates
with a broad grounding in the History of Science and Technology as
well as expertise in the history of medicine. Candidates with
experience in teaching adult learners at a distance would be
preferred. You will be required to contribute to a course in the
History of Medicine in its social context between 1500-1900, writing
distance teaching texts and contributing to audio-visual and possibly
multi-media components. The course will extend beyond Europe. You
will be required to contribute to a re-make of the current early
modern history of science course The Rise of Scientific Europe 1500-
1800 and contribute to the presentation of the course in
maintenance. You will be expected to take an interest in
interdisciplinary courses in the Arts.
Appointment will be made on the Lecturer Grade A salary scale (17,238-
22,579 pounds pa, under review) or the Lecturer Grade B salary scale
(23,521-30,065 pounds pa, under review), depending on qualifications
and experience.

Lectureship in Science Communication/Public Understanding of Science
Temporary Three Year Post
You will be expected to contribute to the production and presentation
of modules in the Science Studies strand of the Msc in Science
(Science and the Public, Communicating Science and The Project
Module). You will also be expected to contribute to issues-based
undergarduate courses in science, eg Science Matters. You must be
able to write well in order to communicate complex scientific ideas
clearly. You will be expected to have an established research career
with a publication and, perhaps, grant award record.
You should hold a PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant
subject. An interest in adult education or experience of distance
education would be useful.
The post is available from January 2000. Appointment will be made on
the Lecturer A grade salary scale (1,238-22,579 pounds pa according
to qualifications and experience.
