SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
_DEADLINE APRIL 10TH, 1999_
125th Anniversary of the Tetrahedral Carbon Atom
ACS National Meeting, New Orleans, LA, 22-25 August 1999
The year 1999 marks the 125th anniversary of the tetrahedral carbon atom.
In honor of that anniversary the Division of Organic Chemistry, the
Division of the History of Chemistry, and The Chemical Heritage Foundation
are cosponsoring a symposium at the August 1999 New Orleans National
Meeting of the American Chemical Society. Ideally, the symposium will be a
mixture of papers on historical topics and reflections on current issues
in stereochemistry by chemists (but not straightforward research results).
Topics could include all developments in the history of stereochemistry
since 1874, including (but certainly not limited to):
-new perspectives on J. H. van't Hoff and J. A. Le Bel
-the role of stereochemistry in the chemistry of Derek Barton, R. B.
Woodward, Vladimir Prelog, and other twentieth century organic chemists.
-the use of models in visualizing molecules
-the adoption of the tetrahedron in individual countries.
-philosophical issues relating to stereochemistry.
-the role of symmetry and asymmetry in scientific explanation
-crystallography, optical activity and chemistry
It is hoped that the papers will be published collectively as a special
issue of the _Bulletin for the History of Chemistry_, the publication of
the Division of the History of Chemistry.
The current list of potential speakers includes:

Pierre Laszlo (Universite of Liege, Belgium)
Peter Ramberg (Johns Hopkins University)
Christopher Ritter (University of California-Berkeley)
Jay Siegel (University of California, San Diego)
Leo Slater (Chemical Heritage Foundation)
Anyone interested in contributing additional papers to the symposium should
