Dear Colleagues,
I am forwarding this message on behalf of
Professor J E Beckman of the Instituto de Astrofisica Das
Canarias, and I hope it will be of interest to many list members;
The Canary Orotava Foundation for the History of Science.
International Symposium on Galileo:2001.
PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Canary Orotava Foundation for the History of Science is organizing an
International Conference on Galileo in Tenerife,in February 2001.
1. The subject matter of the conference will be divided,for organizational
purposes,into the following three areas:
* Galileo's Science
* Galileo and the Church
* The Century of Galileo.
Under the first heading,as well as Galileo's own contributions to the
specific branches of the new science- laws of motion,astronomical discoveries,
and so on.,we will be bringing out his development of a self-contained
branch of knowledge,with its methodology and its contents,in relation to the
philosophical tradition extant at the end of the C XVI.
Without direct relation to discussions about contents,it is just the
propect of the development of a self-contained branch of knowledge which
brought about the inevitable conflict with the Church,first with the
disguised sentence of 1616,and then with the final sentence of 1633.We
stress how any evaluation of the Galilean opus,from the year 1610 until his death,must take into account the importance and gravity of this conflict.
Thirdly we will direct our attention to the cultural,idelological
and institutional contexts in which the Pisan scientist created and developed
his thought (the University,the Court,the Academy),and the characteristics
of the patronage especially of the Church.We will deal with Galileo's
legacy to posterity:the role of the Galilean School in Italy,the birth in
that country and in other countries in Europe of new intellectual figures,
often outside the universities.We will be interested in the formation of
a new scientific spirit,epitomized by Galileo and characterized by the
application of mathematical methods to the study of nature and of the
universe.
