In part response to Steve Fuller's mail:
The British Society for the History of Science established a book
prize in 1997 to mark the Society's 50th Anniversary. It is named
after Herbert Dingle, a founder member of the Society, and is
awarded biennially for the best book in a category to be chosen by
Council. Its value is stlg300.
The Society is acutely aware of the importance of getting good
history of science across to wide audiences. Accordingly, the Dingle
Prize for 1999 will be offered for the best book on history science
published in English between January 1996 and December 1998
which is also accessible to a wider public. All members of BSHS will
be invited to nominate books for the Prize.
The Society is also planning a conference on 'History of Science and the
Public Understanding of Science' to be held in spring 2000: the question
of popular history of science will no doubt feature prominently!
Best wishes and a happy new year to all,
Jeff Hughes
BSHS Secretary
