forum for debate across media, communication and cultural studies.

National and international perspectives
As the conference of the national subject association, Taking Stock will
address issues specific to UK Higher Education, while contributions from
speakers and delegates from North American, Australia, Europe and
elsewhere will facilitate an international exchange of ideas. There will
plenty of opportunity to discuss and reflect on the development of media,
cultural and communication studies in British and other national
contexts/education systems.
Conference themes
Our call for papers invited contributions which used the conference as an
opportunity to look back as well as forward, taking stock of the distinct
and overlapping fields in which we work not only conceptually but in
relation to teaching and the integration of practice work into media
studies.
In addition to the plenary sessions and workshops, selected panel sessions
will explore the following key themes and questions:
The challenges and opportunities posed by 'new media' for our
understanding of media and our practice as teachers.
The developing shape of media and cultural studies, including the place of
media practice.
>From audiences and 'effects' to authorship, how might media and cultural
theory be invigorated by a re-evaluation of the conceptual traditions
developed over the past century?
