Launch of The Martell French Cinema Tour

in London on 16 September

On 16 September the first Martell French Cinema Tour will be launched
with the preview screening of ‘Time Regained’ at London’s High Street
Kensington Odeon. Catherine Deneuve, John Malkovitch, Raul Ruiz,
Daniel Toscan du Plantier- president of Unifrance Film- and a host of
other British and French actors and directors will attend.

For the first time in the UK, a unique touring showcase of
contemporary French cinema

>From highbrow to high action, a selection of seven recent French films
will travel throughout the UK this autumn in the Martell French Cinema
Tour. Martell Cognac and the French Embassy have joined forces to
showcase the strength and variety of the French Film Industry. Odeon
Cinemas is supporting the tour by screening most of the films in
seventeen city centre cinemas – making films more easily accessible
and attracting new audiences to French film. City Screen will also
host the tour in four venues. This is the first time in forty years
that French cinema has been promoted in the United Kingdom on such a
grand scale.

The Tour aims to become an annual festival. The Tour aims to become an
annual festival. ‘Providing widespread distribution of French films in
the UK is one of our main goals’ says Christian Boudier, the Tour
organiser. ‘Martell Cognac was eager to work with us on fostering new
audiences for French cinema in this country. The Tour highlighhts a
new generation of actors and directors.’

There are films to suit all tastes : fasten your seat belts with Taxi,
a blockbuster produced by Luc Besson (over 6 million tickets sold in
France), enjoy the provençal way of life in The Children of the
Marshland, with Eric Cantona, Michel Serrault and André Dussollier,
have a good laugh with Man is a Woman, ‘un film gai’ with Antoine de
Caunes and Elsa Zylberstein, and dream with Proust in the acclaimed
Time Regained (Le temps retrouvé), by Raoul Ruiz, starring Catherine
Deneuve, John Malkovich, Vincent Pérez and Emmanuelle Béart – fresh
from Cannes !

Let’s Talk about French Cinema

The Tour will be a springboard for seminars, conferences and debates
on the nature and evolution of French Cinema and its significance for
French society.

Film Education will oversee the impact of the Tour on schools,
universities (French and T.V./Media Departments), Adult Education
Institutions, French Institutes or Alliances Françaises. Teaching
Packs will be available for Moon Calf and The Children of the
Marshland - tel : 0171 976 22 91 or [log in to unmask])
