The Amsterdam Maastricht Summer University
Introduction
Every day, journalists and researchers search for background or hot

work: e-mail to contact people and conduct interviews for research,
newsgroups to discover, require and generate information, browsers to
search
for sites and search engines to locate the exact information. The teaching
will be gradual, from more basic to advanced research and retrieval
techniques and to other sources of information such as commercial
databases.

The Amsterdam-Maastricht Summer University
Introduction
In the sixties and seventies news reporting was straight and serious, in
the
eighties it was explanatory, but news in the nineties has become
increasingly reliant on shock, gossip, celebrity and revelation.
How will news be reported in the new millennium? This seminar discusses
the
future of news and the effect of the infotainment revolution.
Applicant profile
Journalists, researchers, journalism students, broadcasting policy makers,
communication officers and academics interested in the subject of news and
infotainment.
Language
English
Location
The seminar will be held at the European Journalism Centre, Avenue de la
Ceramique 50, Maastricht, The Netherlands.
Fee
NLG 1250, including lunches and free access to the International Summer
Stage, the cultural programme of the Amsterdam-Maastricht Summer
University.
Application

apply for a scholarship you will have to send together with your
application
and your curriculum vitae, a letter of motivation and a letter of
recommendation, (all in English).
Registration
Participants are expected to register for the seminar on Tuesday 13 July
from 2-5 p.m. at the European Journalism Centre, Avenue de la Ceramique 50,
Maastricht, The Netherlands.
Programme
Wednesday July 14: From Information to Infotainment
09h00 Participants arrive at the EJC. Tea/Coffee
09h30 Here is the news (Gie Meeuwis)
The opening session will look at the development of TV news over the years
charting the transition from the mission to explain to the mission to
entertain. Archive footage of classic news reporting, plus video
contributions from some of the men and women responsible for today's news
operations in Europe.
11h00 Coffee break
11h30 The Infotainment Revolution (Janet Trewin)
What is infotainment and what impact is it having on news broadcasts and
current affairs programming. In the next millennium, are we in for a diet
of
endless talk shows, public confessions, manufactured confrontations and
revelations?
12h30 Lunch
13h30 Workshop: 2020 Vision (Janet Trewin and Gie Meeuwis)
Working in groups and with the help of the course leaders, participants
must
put together a news programme for the year 2020. Using the news events of
the day, the mission is to concoct an infotainment news cast worthy of the
new millennium. The challenge is to develop a format where traditional
journalistic standards and quality is maintained, while also appealing to a
wide audience.
15h00 Coffee break
15h30 Presentation of 'News 2020'.
Working groups present their futuristic infocasts following by a group
discussion of the programme formats and criteria put forward.
17h00 End of first day's programme.
Thursday July 15: The Business of Broadcasting
09h00 Arrival. Tea/coffee
09h30 Whose News? (Gie Meeuwis)
Increasing commercial competition means a harder market approach to news.
Focus groups and branding help set the pace of the new news agenda. But who
is choosing the news to be covered? The editors or the marketeers who must
sell the station?
11h00 Coffee break
11h30 Who Views? (Janet Trewin)
The news audience is disappearing. Surveys reveal that teenagers are not
interested in the traditional TV news product. Online services are surging
ahead. The U.S. A. experience is a disillusioned, disbelieving public
turning off the traditionally money-spinning flagship news offerings. Where
are they going and can they be brought back?
12.30 Lunch
13h30 On the frontline (Gie Meeuwis)
This session looks at the changing role of the news reporter in the face of
commercial pressures, infotainment and marketing. What stories are covered
and is there a moral dimension? Whatever happened to investigations? Do
editors want objectivity or opinions? Contributions from news reporters.
15h00 Coffee break
15h30 The New Breed (Janet Trewin)
Who are the new stars of infotainment and what are they offering? What is
behind their revolutionary, irreverent approach and what does the future
hold?
17h00 End of second day's programme
Friday July 16: Looking Ahead
09h00 Arrival. Tea/coffee
09h30 Taking Action
In the build up to the debate, work begins on the composition of a mission
statement for the industry featuring good intentions and warnings of
danger.
11h00 The Great Debate (Chaired by Janet Trewin)
Motion: "Infotainment is the way ahead for TV news in the next century".
- Roger Bolton
- Jean Paul Marthoz, European, Information Director, Human Rights Watch
- Third speaker to be confirmed
Each speakers has 20 minutes to present their arguments for or against the
motion.
Followed by group discussion.
13h30 Lunch
14h30 The Way Ahead (Janet Trewin and Gie Meeuwis)
Following on from the debate, the final session will be used to complete
the
mission statement.
15h00 Evaluation session: Where now and Was it Good for You?
Floor is opened to participants. Attendees draft their thoughts on media
heaven or hell in the future and state publicly what they believe to be the
chances and/or desirability of achieving the mission statement in their
area.
Course leaders Janet Trewin, BBC journalist and lecturer in TV
broadcasting,
City University, London. Gie Meeuwis, lecturer in TV Broadcasting, Academie
voor Journalistiek, Tilburg, The Netherlands
