INFORMATION ON EUROPE-WIDE COMMUNICATION NETWORK

EUROPEAN CONSORTIUM FOR COMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH (ECCR)

AND CALL FOR PAPERS

FOR CONFERENCE IN LEIPZIG, GERMANY, 31 JULY 1999

The primary goal of the European Consortium for Communication
Research (ECCR) is to exchange information and documentation
about relevant research activities and meetings, and to organize
research activities and meetings. The ECCR, like the European
Consortium of Political Research (ECPR), operates through institutions.
The Consortium welcomes institutions throughout Europe - North, South,
East and West.

However, as the ECCR wishes to serve particularly the younger
generation of scholars in the field of media, information and
(tele)communications research, the ECCR activities will be open to
interested individuals regardless of their affiliation.

The initial Steering Committee of the ECCR: Jan Servaes, coordinator
(Belgium), Jan van Cuilenburg (Netherlands), Kaarle Nordenstreng
(Finland), Michael Palmer (France) and Yassen Zassoursky (Russia).

Twenty-four institutions from 16 European countries, as well as a
number of individuals from Europe and the USA have signed the so-called
letter of intent and consequently decided to join the ECCR.

The ECCR, together with the German Association for Communication
Research (DGKF) and the German Association for Journalism and
Communication (PuK), continues to study the feasibility of a European
Association for Communication Research (ECR). This ECR may be launched
in 1999.

In the meantime, the ECCR is invited by the local organisers of the
IAMCR conference in Leipzig (July 28-30, 1999) to organise a special
plenary session on the future of European Communication Research. The
general theme of the conference is: "Media Systems in Transition on the
Eve of the Information Society of the 21th Century".

The ECCR will also organise a special one-day conference for junior
scholars on Saturday, July 31, 1999. Those interested in submitting an
abstract or paper are requested to do so before April 1 1999 for
abstracts and July 1 for full papers. Especially junior scholars and
PhD-students ars encouraged to submit.

Three theme-sessions are planned:

 - Public Service Broadcasting in Europe (Convenors: Jo Bardoel and Jan
Van Cuilenburg E-mail:
</fontfamily><<[log in to unmask]<fontfamily><param>Times</param>>)

 - Media Criticism Today (convenor: Risto Kunelius Email:
<<[log in to unmask]>)

 - The socio-cultural consequences of the European Information Society
(Convenors: Jan Servaes and Jean-Claude Burgelman E-mail:
[log in to unmask])

Participants wishing to contribute a paper should submit an
extended abstract (not exceeding 800 words/two
pages) before <underline>April 1, 1999</underline> to the
convenors of a session (see email address above) Early abstracts will
be given priority. The convenors will select those to be used, inform
the authors accordingly before May 1, 1999. The deadline for the
submission of full papers is <underline>July 1, 1999</underline>.
Abstracts and papers can be sent by mail, fax or e-mail.

Abstracts and/or papers can be submitted to: Jan Servaes,
