Media Studies at the Millennium
							MeCCSA Annual Conference and AGM

At Stephenson Hall, Sheffield University, Jan 7th to 9th 2000

This inaugural conference of the new association will provide a lively
forum for debate across media, communication and cultural studies.
Confirmed plenary speakers:
Lawrence Grossberg (University of North Carolina)
Richard Johnston (Nottingham Trent University)
Dennis McQuail (Emeritus Professor, University of Southampton)
Liesbet van Zoonen (University of Amsterdam)

Special sessions/symposia:
'Discourse, Transformation and Biopolitics: Interrogating the British
Experience' Workshop convened by Communication Studies research Group,
Sheffield Hallam University (Kathy Doherty, Caroline Dryden, Jill McKenna,
Noel Williams)

'Debating concepts of Authorship and National Cinema: The Place of the
'Auteur' in contemporary Australian Cinema' (Andrew Hassam University of
Wales Lampeter, Ros Jennings CGCHE, Jonathan Rayner, Sheffield Hallam
University, and with a video contribution from Graeme Turner, University
of Queensland)

The conference also features panels convened by members of the Radio
Studies Network and by the Association of Media Practice Educators (AMPE).

National and international perspectives
As the conference of the national subject association, Taking Stock will
address issues specific to UK Higher Education, while contributions from
speakers and delegates from North American, Australia, Europe and
elsewhere will facilitate an international exchange of ideas. There will
plenty of opportunity to discuss and reflect on the development of media,
cultural and communication studies in British and other national
contexts/education systems.

Conference themes
Our call for papers invited contributions which used the conference as an
opportunity to look back as well as forward, taking stock of the distinct
and overlapping fields in which we work not only conceptually but in
relation to teaching and the integration of practice work into media
studies.
In addition to the plenary sessions and workshops, selected panel sessions
will explore the following key themes and questions:
The challenges and opportunities posed by 'new media' for our
understanding of media and our practice as teachers.
The developing shape of media and cultural studies, including the place of
media practice.
>From audiences and 'effects' to authorship, how might media and cultural
theory be invigorated by a re-evaluation of the conceptual traditions
developed over the past century?

For further details please contact the Conference Organiser, Jayne Morgan,
at the address below. A registration form appears at the end of this
document.
Registration forms should arrive no later than December 20 1999: Jayne
