TALKS AND DOCUMENTARIES
A Radio History Symposium
Bournemouth University 24th/25th June 1999
(12.00pm Thursday to 12.00pm Friday)
The growth of "radio studies" is one of the most important recent
developments in the study of the media. At Bournemouth University this
trend is seen in the continuing work on a BBC Radio 4 Analysis archive.
Other Radio Studies conferences and meetings have tended to focus on radio
drama. This event is different in giving priority to "current affairs".
This symposium is an opportunity for academics, teachers, producers and
archivists to discuss issues arising from the study of radio talks and
documentaries in their historical context, and the early days of Analysis.
Symposium Themes
Speech in current affairs radio
Radio audiences
Current affairs radio and the political and social agenda
Radio features
Broadcasting archives (radio and television)
Digitising radio
Current affairs radio - past, present and future
Speakers
Both academics and producers will speak. Piers Plowright (the pre-eminent
features producer) and James Boyle* (Controller, Radio 4) as well as former
Analysis producers will contribute. Academics confirmed so far include:
Andrew Crisell (University of Sunderland); Peter Lewis (London School of
Economics); John Corner (University of Liverpool); John Ellis and Sean
Street (Bournemouth University). As this is a symposium the emphasis will
be
on discussion, and all sessions will be professionally recorded.
