Re: touchscreen web browsers
Iain,
We've been using Internet Explorer on a touchscreen for some time. However,
not for open web access, but as a convenient way to create an interactive
programme, using appropriate buttons and hotspots.
One other point is the need to set this up so that it is tamper-proof and
can be used unattended in a gallery. (I assume this is the whole point of
using a touchscreen). The old Mosaic browser had a 'kiosk mode' button,
which turned off the title bar and menus, and prevented anyone from closing
down or going 'behind' the application. Earlier versions of Internet
Explorer inherited this feature - although it was well hidden. In IE3 (for
Windows 3.1), for example, you edit the file iexplore.ini and change the
line 'kiosk = no' to 'kiosk = yes'. Does anyone know how to do this in later
versions? Although you can do something similar in IE5 (press F11 to turn
off the title bar, tool bar and status bar, then right click in the menu bar
and select 'auto hide' to turn off the menu bar), it is not completely
tamper-proof because the 'resize / close window' controls re-appear briefly
each time you load a new page.
