New Partnership For Museums, Galleries And Schools -
Clarke
A new £2.5 million programme aimed at developing the educational role of
museums and art galleries over the next three years was announced by
Schools Minister Charles Clarke today.
The programme will create new opportunities for young people to get
more out of museums and galleries, and encourage museums and
galleries to develop their educational role and strengthen their links with
schools.
Mr Clarke said: "Good museums and galleries provide an invaluable
resource for schools. They can inspire children and bring the curriculum
to life, developing new ways of thinking and learning. With this as a
starting point, the new programme aims to exploit to the full the potential
of as many museums and galleries as possible across the country.
"I am today inviting partnerships of schools, museums and galleries to
submit project proposals which will forge closer links between them or
spread existing good practice to other areas."
Priority will be given to projects which take forward work in the following
areas:
literacy, numeracy and science;
improvement of museums’ learning facilities, to assist learning by
children, and family learning;
developing museums and galleries work within schools, through
loan services or other means;
using IT to develop museum/school links;
the education of children with special needs;
employability and preparing young people for adult life;
training and development to enable museum and gallery staff and
teachers to build more effective museum/school links.
Mr Clarke said: "Education is a prime function of museums and galleries
and central to a great deal of their activity. It is the reason why many of
them were established in the first place. This new programme will give
them the opportunity to develop still further their role in supporting
learning at school and in families".
