Many thanks for the responses.
We have found the level of support for the STAR system from the software
company Cuadra to be extremely efficient considering they are based in the
States. As a UK customer however, we are channelled through the UK reseller
Sweetens Computer Services. It is Sweetens who have recently sold STAR
support to Glomas of Munich. I understand that there is a possibility of
Glomas opening an outlet in London in the future, although this is not
confirmed.
I agree fully with the comments that some form of local support is necessary
and although this does raise concern, the main issue I have encountered is
that of software training. For systems management/development training we
are required to fly in Cuadra staff from the States. This could prove to be
a problem for the Armouries in the future as we consider the development of
public access interfaces to our databases.
This was the reason I originally contacted the list, to make contact with
other UK STAR users and share experiences. I appreciate that very few UK
museums are using the system - the system is predominantly used within
libraries and publishing companies.
