Hi all,
This is to announce that the second LVRG meeting in the 1999 series
*REFOCUSING VIRTUAL REALITY* (see details below) is scheduled for the
second Wednesday in July. The topic will be Virtual Reality and 'The
Body'.
As with the first meeting in this series (on VR and 'Presence'), there
will
be some short talks, demonstrations of related projects in the lobby,
and a
'panel led' debate. As usual we will be mixing this with time for
informal
chat, drinks, etc.
Date: Wednesday, 14th July 1999
Time: 18.30-21.30
Venue: The Virtual Reality Centre for the Built Environment
Address: 1-19 Torrington Place, London WC1 (just off Tottenham Court
Road
for a detailed map see: http://uk.multimap.com/)
Sponsor: VR News (http://www.vrnews.com)
[[ Please remember to sign up as a member of the group on the website
(http://www.lvrg.org.uk). We will only be able to admit members to the
meeting, and as we can cater for a maximum of 80 people, we will have to
let people in on a 'first come - first served' basis. Full details of
how to join
the LVRG mailing list are given on the website.]]
Here is the proposed schedule for the evening:
18.30-18.45 arrival, drink in foyer
18.45-18.55 "Introduction: moving bodies in VR" by Scott deLahunta
Scott is an independent researcher, writer on topic of overlap between
dance/ theatre and new technologies [ http://www.art.net/~dtz ])
18.55-19.10 "Virtual People and 3-D Capture: populating virtual worlds"
Adrian Hilton
(Research Fellow working on 3D Vision in the VSSP Group at the
University of Surrey
[http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Research/VSSP/3DVision/VirtualPeople/ ])
Adrian leads a research team in 3D Vision at the Centre for Vision,
Speech and Signal Processing, University of Surrey. The goal of this
research is to develop vision based systems for capturing accurate
photo-realistic
models of real world objects and their movements. Previous work has
resulted in
the first hand-held system for capturing accurate models of complex 3D
objects suitable for computer generated imagery.
Virtual People will present results of recent work aimed at capturing
realistic animated 3D models of individual to populate virtual worlds. A
model-based
technique has been developed for capturing an individuals shape and
appearance from a set of colour images. This system is currently being
commercially
developed by 3D Scanners into a capture booth for mass-user application.
19.15-19.35 "High Fidelity Clients and Low Fidelity Gossip." Tim Child
(founder and managing director of Televirtual
[http://www.televirtual.co.uk/ ],
the entertainment technology company which specialises in development
of sophisticated Virtual Humans)
Tim is the award winning TV producer and games designer, blamed for
introducing Virtual Reality and Virtual Humans to our TV screens. Today
he
heads the entertainment technology company, Televirtual.

during the break there will be a chance to chat, and see:
VR-Systems in the Foyer: showing a video of Cyberesphere, the unique
whole body navigation system

Goodwin Marcus Systems in Foyer - Full body motion tracking using
Ascension Technology's MotionStar (6DOF magnetic motion trackers) with
Deneb Robotic's
Envision/ERGO (virtual human for workplace task analysis and ergonomic
assessment). Live immersed interactive
demonstration.

Ted Polhemus's slides: Style Surfing will be showing in the theatre

20.00-20.30 "Power of Style in Cyberspace" Ted Polhemus
(anthropologist, lecturer, specialist in body based, non-verbal
communication, author of
several books including _Style Surfing:What to Wear in the 3rd
Millennium_
and _The Customized Body_)
Together with verbal language, human beings have always communicated
nonverbally with body style. In the past a typically disembodied form of
interaction,
computer mediated communication now needs to re-discover the
extraordinary power of body style. I'll show you mine if you show me
yours.
Ted Polhemus trained as an anthropologist. A writer, teacher, marketing
consultant,
exhibition organiser and frequent guest on TV and radio he is the author
of
Fashion & Anti-fashion, Body Styles, Streetstyle, The Customised Body
and Style Surfing.
20.40-21.30 Chaired Debate: The debate will involve the speakers and
some special guests
and will focus on issues raised during the talk and q&a.

*REFOCUSING VIRTUAL REALITY* - a series of talks for The London Virtual
Reality Group (1999-2000)
We have arranged a series of 4 meetings on the theme (the series has
been
sponsored by VR NEWS). As we approach the next century (and
millennium :-), it seems an appropriate point to assess the state of VR
and
to look forward to the next 100 years (the next millennium might be too
ambitious...but if you have a vision, there will be plenty of time for
discussion!).
The four topics for the series are:
** presence (a look at us the latest research and theories concerning
the
sense of presence in a virtual environment and a debate
on future research and applications)
** the body (what does it mean to be embodied in a virtual reality,
where
will this have most impact in the next century)
** community (is there are developing consensus of how a community will
form in shared virtual space, how will the communities of the next
century evolve)
** narrative (how have the complex issues of interactive narrative been
addressed and what developments will we see in the future)
[[ Topics following the fist meeting have not been fixed and we are open
to
suggestions, so please mail a committee member if you have an
alternative or additional topic. ]]
