'Presence in the future'
The firsts meeting in the 1999-2000 series 'Refocusing Virtual Reality'
(for details of the series see below).

This meeting is the first in the 1999 series 'Refocusing Virtual
Reality' (for details see below). As usual there will be plenty of
breaks for drinks, chat. For this meeting, there will also be the chance
to flying VR models and try on one of the latest VR headsets (see
below).

Steve Ellis (Head of the Advanced Displays and Spatial Perception
Laboratory, NASA Ames Research Center)
Dr. Stephen R. Ellis is the Head of the Advanced Displays and Spatial
Perception Laboratory in the Human and Systems Technologies Branch of
the Flight Management and Human Factors Division of the NASA Ames
Research Center. Dr. Ellis received a Ph.D. (1974) from McGill
University in Psychology after receiving a A.B. in Behavioral Science
from U.C. Berkeley. He has had postdoctoral fellowships in Physiological
Optics at Brown University and U.C. Berkeley. He has published
extensively in the area of formats for presenting spatial information,
with over 100 journal publications and formal reports, and has recently
edited a book, Pictorial communication in virtual and real environments,
(Taylor and Francis, London 1991, 1993 2nd ed.).

Sharon Springel (Microsoft Industrial Research Fellow at CCSR)
Sharon Springel has been an Industrial Research Fellow at CCSR since
February 1998. Prior to this, she was head of programme development at
the British National Film and Television School, and a founding member
of CREATEC, the national centre of excellence for digital media
development. Before becoming involved in media training and development,
she spent a decade pursuing a career within the British film and
television industry, where she worked across many fields ranging from
screenwriting, through cinematography and editing, to producing and
directing both factual and fictional programmes. This included
directorships in 3 independent film and video production companies;
Front Page Films from 1984-1986, TwinTake from 1988-1992, and The Video
Department, a division of the Pimlico Arts and Media Centre, from
1991-1994. She is a past member of the Executive Council of CILECT,
(Centre International de Liason des Ecoles de Cinema et de Television),
and of the Skillset Audio Visual Industry Advisory Committee, the
training policy group which helps to shape development within the
British screen industries.

Jonathan Freeman (Senior Research Officer, Department of Psychology,
University of Essex) and Wijnand IJsselsteijn (IPO, Center for
Research on User-System Interaction) will be joining Steve Ellis and
Sharon Springel for the panel session.
