Hello UKOLUG members,
Here is a quick question from a student member. I am currently evaluating Dialog
as an electronic database resource as part of coursework for my MLIS
programme. Part of my brief is to "give my opinion of the recall/precision
tradeoff, the amount of time(and the cost implications of that time) it took to
achieve satisfactory results". Having lurked on this list all year, read the
UKOLUG newletters and attended the UKOLUG conference, it is clear that
Dialog has undergone many changes in that time. Indeed, in the short time I have
been working on it, the dialindex feature seems to have changed rather radically.
My question to you, as professionals working with Dialog, is to what extent has
this 'inconsistency' affected your views of Dialog. Have the many pricing and
format changes had any lasting or particular affect on what value you place on
Dialog as an information resource? Any replies would be most appreciated.
