**Unlocking the gene: Sources of genetic information**
The ASLIB Biosciences Group Annual Conference***
20th May 1999
Zoological Society of London, Regent's Park, London
In a little over a decade genetic engineering has progressed from a research
topic to the key technology for several industries, including crop breeding,
pharmaceuticals, genetic counselling, and animal husbandry. Growth has been so
fast that there is concern about the ethical, moral, property rights and safety
aspects of some of the applications. Unlocking the gene introduces the
information specialist to the technology and the problems. It identifies some
of the questions that users may ask, and indicates sources for answers, many of
which are outside the traditional remit of bioscience information. The
conference also provides an opportunity to visit the Zoological Society of
London Library to remind oneself what whole animals look like!
