Subject: Call for proposals in Inforamtion Retrieval research
**Apologies for cross-posting**
The British Library Research and Innovation Centre has issued a call
for proposals for research into information retrieval, with a closing
date of 12.00 noon on Friday 7th May 1999.
Proposals are sought in all areas of information retrieval, including
studies of user needs and information-seeking behaviour aimed at
providing evidence relevant to the design of retrieval systems. All
proposals must address a genuine research question: proposals aimed
solely at systems development or resource creation will not be
accepted. Projects which aim to develop new methods and techniques
will be expected to devote significant resources to their evaluation.
Although proposals in any area of information retrieval will be
considered, the Centre would particularly welcome proposals addressing
one or both of the following two major action lines, which should be
read in the context of the previous paragraph:
Multimedia and image retrieval: The Centre would welcome proposals for
research aimed at improving access to multimedia documents, either as
a whole or in relation to specific component media. Proposals
relating to image retrieval - by automatic feature recognition or
verbal indexing or a mixture of methods - will be welcomed, in the
context either of multimedia documents or of free-standing image
collections.
Retrieval on the Internet: The Centre would welcome proposals for
research which would contribute to the development of improved means
of access to, and user interaction with, information on the World Wide
Web or on intranets, whether based on automatic means or human
assignment of metadata (or both). The Centre would also welcome
proposals for evaluation of - and for establishing criteria for
evaluating - existing tools such as search engines, subject gateways,
intelligent agents, etc.
