Altavista is relaunched today.
I have just had a quick 5 minutes on it which is not enough to do a
thorough comparison with the previous version, but here are my first
impressions.
It has a new look which, to me, is far too busy and just as confusing
(if not more) as before. The home page uses a fixed width table so
you may find that you have to use the horizontal scroll bar to see
what is on the right hand side of the screen.
>From the default search screen you can carry out the usual "simple"
search for Web pages. The Advanced Search (Boolean) has a much more
prominent Tab and the image, video and audio searches are also now
under a separate tab.
I carried out a couple of my standard searches and they have
significantly altered the ranking algorithms.
Altavista Sweden is back at http://www.altavista.se/ but is in
Swedish. Searches so far have given exactly the same results as the
main US site but we will have to wait and see if it stays that way.
