UK Online User Group, Quarterly Report, 30th September 1999
1. UKOLUG AGM and New Management Committee
The AGM was well attended and the committee was heartened by the
support from members concerning the LA-IIS merger talks. There was
much discussion on the future of UKOLUG but this had to be curtailed
because of lack of time. Hazel Hall stood down from the committee,
and Alison McNab and Tracy Mulvaney resigned under Rule 11 (one third
clause) and stood for re-election. The following were elected or
re-elected to the committee: Chris Armstrong, Gary Horrocks, Alison
McNab, Tracy Mulvaney, Martin White and Jason Williams. Laurence
Bebbington agreed to be co-opted with responsibility for legal
matters. The new Management Committee members are:
Karen Blakeman - Chair, Telecoms, Rep to IIS council
Chris Armstrong - Vice Chair, Awards, Publications, Newsletter Editor
Brendan Loughridge - Hon Treasurer
Alison McNab - Hon. Secretary, LIS-UKOLUG, Search Engines
Anne Barker - Online Industry
Laurence Bebbington - Legal Issues
Jo Dobson - Marketing, Public Relations
Gary Horrocks - JIBS User Group
Jeni Larkin - UKOLUG Web Page
Tracy Mulvaney - Bibliographic Software, International Liaison
Nigel Robinson - Meetings co-ordinator, Newsletter Production Editor
Martin White - Telecoms, Networks
Jason Williams - Responsibilities to be confirmed
2. LA/IIS Merger
Following the UKOLUG and IIS AGMs, we have received several
communications from members concerning the LA-IIS merger. We are
waiting for the result of the vote to be held at the LA AGM before
actively canvassing all of our members for their views on the future
of UKOLUG.
3. Meetings and Conference
The July and September meetings were well attended and included
Internet Resources in Biomedicine, A Bluffer's Guide to Knowledge
Management, Intranets - Do they Deliver?, Bibliographic Software, and
Small Business Information on the Internet. The meetings programme
for next year is now being compiled and next year's conference
programme finalised.
4. Publications
The UKOLUG Newsletter has been expanded to include a Legal Issues
column and regular book reviews. The committee is investigating the
possibility of putting some sections of the newsletter onto the Web
site. Two new publications will be launched in the autumn/winter
quarter: UKOLUG Quick Guide to Effective Use of the Internet and
UKOLUG Quick Guide to Personal Bibliographic Software.
5. Online 99
UKOLUG will again provide the Help Desk for the International Online
Exhibition which is to be held in London in December. We will be
running two help desks this year, one on the ground floor and the
other on the first floor.
6. Membership and Finances
Membership remains healthy as does the Group's finances.
