EXPANDING HORIZONS - Making use of the new Information Technologies 19
July, 26 July, 2 August, 9 August,
16 August
Please find details of the first three sessions and booking form. The venue
is TFPL training suite, 17-18 Britton St, London
19th July Internet and other external resources.
Are you using the Internet as fully and as effectively as you could? The
first day of Expanding Horizons will cover some of the ways in which you
can obtain high quality information quickly and easily. Emphasis will be
placed on using different search engines correctly, and the ways in
which you can transfer existing search techniques to these engines. We
will also cover virtual libraries, intelligent agents and newsgroups.
Finally, we will also hear from a commercial publisher about the ways in
which they are using the Internet to provide access to the products and
discuss the best means of access, be it on optical technology or via an
electronic medium. The day is particularly aimed at information
professionals who use the Internet and commercial services and for those
who wish to expand their skill sets.
26th July Knowledge Management.
Knowledge Management is a 'buzz word' in the world of information, but
what exactly does it mean? Is it what we've always been doing, just
hiding under a new name, or is it actually a different way of arranging
and providing access to information? The course today will look at a lot
of the issues surrounding Knowledge Management - what it is, how it
differs from more traditional approaches, and how the technology can be
used to provide a better service. Time will also be spent looking at
Intranets, and the ways in which they are changing the organisations
approach to information. Finally we will consider the issues surrounding
design of webpages that are used on Intranets, and the ways in which
they differ from WWW pages that are available to the global audience.
2nd August Electronic Publishing.
Publishing information electronically is not a new subject; it has been
available for 30 years. However, with the increased use of the Internet
information professionals are having to consider the different ways that
electronic information is impacting on their jobs. Speakers will cover
the use of electronic journals - and will look at such issues as
electronic versus print, is there room for both, and will use a case
study of an existing electronic publication. Later on in the day, we
will also spend time considering some of the legal implications of
publishing on the Internet - the Data Protection Act and electronic
copyright for example.
