Fletcher Research: Free Access Driving UK Net Growth
Two thirds of British Internet users that access the Net from home no
longer pay an ISP subscription fee, according to a report by Fletcher
Research.
The study predicts that the wide availability of free Net access means
that the total number of Internet users in the UK will exceed 12.5 million
adults by the end of this year, increasing to 13.3 million by 2003.
The report found Freeserve to be the dominant ISP brand in the UK, and
does not see its position as market leader as open to challenge. Fletcher
found that 31 percent of Internet home users were Freeserve subscribers,
followed by BT Click Free, 14 percent, and AOL UK, 9 percent.
BT Internet, CompuServe and Virgin each had 7 percent subscriber base.
Demon Internet and TescoNet each had 5 percent reach, while MSN had a
subscriber base of 4 percent amongst home users.
The findings are based on a survey of 40,000 Internet users across the
UK.
