I didn't quite believe the press release that went out earlier this
week announcing the launch of BT's residential white pages on the
Web, but it really is here.
The URL is:
http://www.bt.com/phonenetuk/
You have to enter part of a name and an "area" - town or county - and
initials or street name are optional. You CANNOT enter a telephone
number and retrieve a name and address.
As well as residential numbers it also allows you to search for
businesses, but unlike EYP you cannot search by business type.
Yesterday (Thursday) it was horrendously slow but then the whole
world and his dog were probably trying it out. This morning, access
speeds were far better but after 4 successful searches it returned
zero hits on all subsequent searches and then crashed my browser.
Naturally it does not include Directory Enquiry only or ex-directory
numbers. Neither does it have the numbers of customers of other telco
operators.
There are severe restrictions on what you can do with the information
- basically it is for personal use only - so those of you who may
want to use it in your library really must study the terms and
conditions very carefully.
