Call for Papers
August 1st, 1999 - Deadline for receipt of abstracts
Parallel Sessions
There will be many contributed paper sessions throughout the Congress mostly
grouped according to theme, client group or discipline. English is the main
language of the Congress but parallel sessions will be held in other languages
(for example French, German, Italian, Japanese Portuguese and Spanish) where
the quality and volume of contributed papers makes this appropriate. Most of
these parallel sessions will feature presentations selected from abstracts
submitted in response to the Call for Papers, and we invite you to submit
abstracts of 300 words or less for consideration by the International Programme
Committee, to be presented as papers or posters, in the following subject
areas:
1. Scholarly communication
Electronic publishing; management of electronic journals; copyright and legal
issues; electronic document delivery; bibliometrics; preservation and
archiving; citation continuity; end-user access
2. The health care context
Education of health professionals; empowering the consumer; health system
reforms; quality of health care; distance learning; telemedicine; evidence
based health care; health care in developing countries; patient partnership;
decision support systems
3. Standing on the shoulders of giants
History of medicine; scenario and strategic planning; good practice
developments; innovative and high risk projects; vision statements; technology
assessment
4. The information centre
Library services management; quality and performance measurement; cooperation
and resource sharing; mobile information access; exploiting, indexing and
customising the web; outsourcing
5. The information professional
Convergence of information and technology roles; professional development;
career planning; home working and consultancy; the knowledge worker
The above themes are for guidance only, and submissions on other topics will
also be welcomed.
How To Submit An Abstract For Consideration
Abstracts must be submitted to the International Programme Committee in English
and must arrive before August 1st, 1999. There are four methods which may be
used, listed here in order of preference:
1. Web form (www.icml.org)
The easiest as well as the preferred method, since there is a formatted
template available on the Congress web site ( which will ensure you include all
the necessary details

For authors without web access, abstracts can be emailed to

Authors without internet access may send a 3½-inch diskette with the text in
Word or Word Perfect format, plus two printed copies to: 8ICML Abstracts, Spri
Library, P O Box 70487, S-107 26 Stockholm, Sweden
4. Other
Authors who have difficulty submitting their abstracts in any of these ways
should send two typewritten copies to the above address
What to Include in Your Submission
Abstracts must be submitted in English.
The following information must be included with each abstract submitted, and
submissions may not be considered for inclusion in the programme if important
details are missing:
The author(s)
Full name of main author; organisation (library, university, hospital, etc);
full address including city, postal code, country, phone number, email, fax;
names of all authors; brief curriculum vitae for each author; indication if
eligible for First Time Presenters Award (see below)
The presentation
Title of presentation; language of presentation; alternative language if first
choice cannot be accommodated; whether the abstract is for oral or poster
presentation (or either); abstract of not more than 300 words
The International Programme Committee will review all contributions and make
the selection for inclusion in the final programme. You will be notified
whether or not your contribution has been accepted and you will be asked to
confirm that you intend to attend the conference to present your work. A letter
of invitation will be sent to all selected authors to assist them in obtaining
funds or a visa to attend the conference. All contributors will be required to
pay the full registration fee for the conference and cover their travel,
accommodation and other personal expenses. Information about the ICML
scholarship process and the application process will be sent to all successful
authors.
Contributors will have the opportunity to submit an updated abstract which will
appear in the final Programme. They will also have the opportunity to submit
their full paper 8 weeks before the conference, to be published in full in the
Proceedings, which will be available on the ICML web site in time for the
conference. The Proceedings will not be published on paper and contributors
may publish their papers elsewhere after the conference.
We particularly welcome contributions from first time presenters. An award will
be made for the best presentation by an author aged under 35 on January 1st,
2000.
