The HSMC Library and Information Service is a specialist healthcare
policy and management information resource, which serves the Health
Services Management Centre and the NHS Executive's Regional Office for
the West Midlands, and is soon to expand to support Birmingham Health
Authority as well. It is a proactive, user centred service, offering
access to a wide range of materials, including a collection of over
100 journals, about 8,000 books and reports, and a wide range of
electronic information sources. We make extensive use of bibliographic
and other databases and the Internet (visit our website at
http://www.bham.ac.uk/hsmc/library for more information).
We are seeking to appoint an energetic and imaginative individual to
lead the further development of the service. The Library and
Information Service Manager will be responsible for identifying and
analysing users' information needs, and then developing and managing
the service to meet and exceed users' requirements, as well as
monitoring its performance against agreed objectives. S/he will be
responsible for developing and exploiting the information resources
available through the service, delivering a range of services
including user education, current awareness and enquiry services,
managing staff and financial resources for the service, providing
strategic and professional advice to HSMC, the West Midlands NHS
Executive Regional Office and Birmingham Health Authority, and
participating in some regional and national networks and activities.
The successful candidate will have a degree or equivalent in
Librarianship/Information Sciences, and previous experience in the
context of a specialist library, preferably concerned with health and
healthcare. S/he will have expertise in using electronic information
resources such as CD ROM databases, online computer systems and
Internet resources. S/he will need excellent interpersonal skills and
the ability to work with users with a wide range of needs,
expectations and skill levels.
