I havent done any formal training, but my limited experience is
that people need to see how it will be useful to be motivated to
come eg free full text BMJ, relevant job ads, continuing ed
materials, OMNI...Things that have personal interest seem
particularly motivating!
What has particularly interested the ones who have attended?
Mention that in your publicity.
Also, skill levels vary hugely. I just sent an email to a nurse
who took a couple of weeks to reply to it, as she didnt know how
to and didnt have the time to track down the IT specialist (none
of her colleagues knew). Then you get the vastly experienced...
Can you take it the training to their area?
Do they have internet access without loads of hassle anyway (the
above mentioned nurse has only one PC with it in her department,
locked in a room, with access only bookable via a parttime
secretary!)?

The Library at Leicester General Hospital is currently undergoing
extensive change and as a newly recruited Information Officer one of
my focal duties is to help develop Internet and Health Database
training so as to optomise use of this service, and 'reach out' to
capitalize upon a wider user group. We currently provide several drop
in sessions over the lunch hour on a monthly basis, but despite
promoting this service and gaining the initial interest of our users,
we have not been inundated with the numbers we had anticipated.
With a view to the above, I wish to explore a different approach to
the subject at hand and would therefore be most grateful if you could
provide details of your training package(s), (via e-mail or letter) by
answering the following.
(1) The type of training your library/information unit provides.
(2) What is included in training i.e. introduction, advanced ,
evidence, critical appraisal and/or other(s).
(3) Whether groups of users are multidisciplinary, of specific
profession, or of specific speciality, or none of
these.
(4) Time(s) you provide training.
Any other feedback you think may be of use to me would be much
appreciated.
Please do not hesitate to contact me re. any of the above and I thank
you in advance for your help.
