I think that is absolutely right. My interpretation of the various messages
coming from (and about) the Dialog Corporation is that they are really only
interested in big corporate clients who will contract to take large amounts
of information paid for up front. This was very much the market that Mead
used to go for, and since taking over Dialog they seem to have been intent
on pushing that service in the same direction. It does not seem to have
occurred to them that marketing medical databases in the same way as news
feeds or financial information is not a viable long term strategy, and
serves neither their interests nor those of their customers.

What also annoyed me about this letter outlining Datastar pricing
structure
is that DataStar did not take the time or effort to customise the
letter for
its European customers. They could have translated the currency into
Sterling and the local currency of their other customers in Europe.
Before
writing, I phoned up the UK desk and harangued them but the got the
usual
bland reply that it was too difficult to customise.
They obviously do not care about our business.

Subject: New DataStar Charging policy
Has anyone else received a letter from DataStar saying that they are
introducing
a $240/year subscription and a minimum $660/year advance payment for
usage?
I think this is an outrageous cheek and am writing to them to say
so. We
have
had a long think and feel that with a little bit of extra trouble
(but not
$880's worth of trouble) we can manage just as well without them.
However,
maybe a bit of coordinated consumer power might make them think
again. If
anyone else is wound up by this, drop me a line and if there is a
critical
mas
we could maybe organise something.
