Hello,
again, thanks to all who responded to my original request for information,
and to Chris Moore and Simon Jackson for asking me to summarise.
In no particular order, organisations who loan laptops:
* Steve Alston ([log in to unmask]) - said that the Southampton
Institute of HE did loan to students [may still do].
* Corinne Cohen ([log in to unmask]) - currently loan out 23 to
staff, and students with special needs. Laptops are barcoded and issued via
the automated library system. A disclaimer must be signed by all borrowers
of this equipment. No recorded incidents of tampering with
software/hardware, just accidental damage.
* Keith Taylor ([log in to unmask]) - Edinburgh University and
Europa Law Library loan to staff and students of the Faculty of Law. Again,
laptops are barcoded and treated as books, loaned for six weeks, if all 4
laptops are on loan, it is possible to recall one.
* Gary Meades ([log in to unmask]) - 2 laptops available for loan, to
college staff only, insurance liability form to be signed in advance. Again,
barcoded and issued as a book. Loans to college staff only, therefore, no
problems with returns or tampering with machines.
* Robin Adams ([log in to unmask]) - Dublin teaching hospital Medical
Library loan 12 machines to students, students ID cards held as security, no
significant tampering with software, some incidents of accidental damage.
* Monica Glynn ([log in to unmask]) - said that Barnsley College
operate a scheme and Ware College may do.
* Steve Phillips ([log in to unmask]) - runs a converged library,
open access computing, learning support service. 15 machines for loan to
students with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties. Issued via
the Dynix automation system.
* Stephen Howe ([log in to unmask]) - said that the Edward
Boyle Library, Leeds Uni. loans laptops to under and postgraduates.
* Anne Ambrose ([log in to unmask]) - 10 laptops for loan, at the
Dublin Institute of Technology, to under and postgraduate students. Short
loan periods only available. Strict deadlines for returns - borrower not
allowed to borrow again if late with return. Borrowers must sign insurance
liability form. Only one serious problem with borrower tampering with with
machine.
Regards,
Gary.
