Quality assurance in open and distance learning
How can you ensure good quality in your learning materials or services? How can you track problems systematically? How can you use your findings to improve quality and satisfy your assessors?

Workshop aims: The workshop should help you to:
1. Examine examples of open and distance learning systems in which quality seems capable of improvement.
2. Identify aspects of your own system whose quality might be improved.
3. Consider a range of tools and approaches for use in quality assurance
4. Draw up an Action Plan for improving quality in your own organisation or section.

Design and production of open and distance learning materials
A 2-day workshop
Date: 12-13th May 1999, 09.30 - 17.00
Venue: The Open University Training Centre, Cofferidge Close, Stony Stratford, Milton Keynes
Who will benefit: Course developers, trainers, writers, editors and managers concerned with the briefing and training of colleagues who will be assembling self-instructional course materials.
Workshop aims: The two day programme will be a combination of presentations and seminars, workshops, simulations and games. It is designed to help you to:
* identify the characteristic features of self-instructional material
* describe, illustrate and begin the analyse the main parameters within which any self-instructional material can be assembled
* assemble a realistic course proposal and production plan
* consider the research evidence associated with the context of learning
* explore the role of formative assessment materials and their design
* generate summative assessment materials and associated marking schemes
* specify the target audience for your teaching material
* estimate learner workload and readability of the materials
* produce guidelines for commenting on draft materials
* consider the mechanisms for materials production
* explore the role of 'old' and new media in assembling teaching material
