PROMOTING YOUR WEB SITE - BEING HEARD THROUGH THE NOISE
William Hann, Managing Editor, Free Pint
Wednesday, 7 July 1999 and Wednesday, 18th August 1999
How easily can people find your Web site? How do you get them to
return time and time again? These and other fundamental
questions will be answered in this evening session aimed at those
responsible for promoting a Web site for a company or
organisation.
Using actual examples successfully employed in promoting Free
Pint (http://www.freepint.co.uk/), William Hann will give
numerous tips and secrets on how to raise the profile of your Web
site - even if on a tight budget. The session also allows time
for questions and so come prepared to get the most from this
experienced site promoter.
IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO START - BEGINNING ON THE INTERNET
Danny Sullivan, President, Calafia Consulting
Wednesday 14th July 1999 and Wednesday 1st September 1999.
If you have only just started to use the Internet this is the
session for you. Danny Sullivan is an Internet expert who knows
how to make it easy for those of us still struggling to master
the basics. During the evening he will demonstrate the essentials
of electronic mail, of surfing the World Wide Web using a browser
and of finding information using the tools available on the
Internet. He will also answer any questions that have baffled
you. No prior knowledge is assumed. The evening is suitable for
beginners who will search the Net at home or at work.
THE INTERNET AND MARKET RESEARCH - ELECTRONIC DESK AND FIELD
RESEARCH
Phil Bradley, Internet Consultant, Trainer, Web Designer and
Author
Wednesday July 21st
Do you want to better understand the marketplace in which you
operate? Do you need to conduct specific market surveys. or
simply locate them? In this session Phil Bradley will show you
how to keep up to date with what your competitors are doing and
with the latest events taking place within your industry. Using
established and new search engines, he will show you how to
locate mailing lists and newsgroups. He will also update you on
the role that intelligent agents can play in doing market
research and point you towards utilities that will make your
market research activities in the field faster and easier. And,
if you have a Web site, you can learn how to find out more about
the people who visit it. This evening is particularly suited to
people new to marketing or to information professionals who need
to keep pace with particular industries.
CATALOGUING IN AN ELECTRONIC AGE
Stephen Bagley, Co-ordinator of the British Library Electronic
Media Group.
Thursday 29th July 1999
As the Internet is being increasingly used in libraries,
searching the Internet and getting a result is very frustrating.
Does the Internet need cataloguing? Is keyword searching really
adequate as the search engine providers insist? With changes to
ISBD (ER) and AACR can cataloguing move into this new area with
confidence?
This talk will look at issues such as these. It will discuss the
new standards that have been created to catalogue the Net, such
as the Dublin Core, and who is cataloguing now. It will cover
projects such as BIBLINK and OCLC's CORC and how they are aiming
to provide access to Internet resources.
KEEPING WITHIN THE LAW IN THE ELECTRONIC LIBRARY.
Reverend Graham Cornish, Copyright Officer, The British Library
Wednesday 4th August 1999
Copying, storing and transmitting electronic material legally is
a complicated area. And just to make things even more demanding,
the goal posts keep moving! To bring you right up to date Graham
will present an overview of all the recent changes in the
electronic arena which impact on the information profession.
Concentrating on the UK and European legal framework for
copyright and data protection he will also highlight significant
developments worldwide.
