UKOLUG Meeting
*****A Bluffer's Guide to Knowledge Management******
Wednesday 14th July 1999, 09.30 - 17.00 School of Oriental & Africa Studies
(SOAS), University College London
As with other socalled management fads, there is a lot of hype surrounding the
concept of knowledge management (KM). Its therefore tempting and convenient
for information professionals to dismiss it out of hand as just another
label for our ongoing activities or not important to us. But to do so without
understanding the ideas involved is shortsighted. A basic understanding and
opinion on knowledge management as a concept demonstrates at the very least an
awareness of current business issues and may provide an opportunity to step out
of a reactive into a more proactive role. This seminar aims to help
participants form their own opinion by trying to answer the questions: What is
it? Who is doing it ? Why do some people see it as the next big thing? Are
there practical benefits being realised or if not, why not? It includes a
quick review of KM tools and a detailed case study by a senior information
specialist involved in their company's KM project. Participants will be
encouraged to discuss ideas, share thoughts and challenge beliefs.
